Chapter 249 There Is Only
So Much He Can Do For...
Wrapped in a long white down coat, the woman lay still, the soft fabric barely concealing the bruises marring her
delicate frame.
Quentin lifted a hand, carefully tucking back the loose strands of hair that veiled her face.
As he did, the full extent of her injuries was laid bare-her skin, once delicate and unblemished, was now mottled
with bruises, thin cuts tracing along her cheekbones, and the corners of her lips split, fresh blood seeping
through the cracks. Her left eye was swollen shut, dark and battered.
Even in this state, Ernest knew her in an instant-Elissa.
His chest tightened, a cold weight settling in his gut. His brows drew together. What had happened to her?
These weren't the kind of wounds left by a car accident. They spoke of violence, of cruelty.
Someone had done this to her. But who?
Quentin's voice was low but firm. “She wasn't hit by the car. She collapsed in front of it-probably from sheer
exhaustion.”
A faint sound escaped Elissa’s lips-a pained murmur.
Her brows knit together, her eyelids fluttering before she finally opened them.
Disoriented, her gaze darted around, momentary panic flashing across her features. Where was she? The last
thing she remembered-was she in a car? No. She had nearly crashed into one.
Her breath hitched as her vision sharpened, and she saw them.
Ernest and Quentin.
She had nearly collided with Ernest's car.
“I'm terribly sorry.” Elissa rubbed her forehead and nodded apologetically at Ernest. “Mr. Flynn, | didn’t mean to
cause trouble. | should get going.”
She turned, ready to slip away, but before she could take a step, Ernest’s firm yet gentle grip closed around her
wrist.
His gaze was steady, his voice unwavering. “You need medical attention. I'll take you to the hospital.”
Elissa hesitated, shaking her head. “It’s nothing serious. Just a few scratches. | don’t want to be a burden. Thank
you, really.”
Pulling free from his grasp, she made for the door, but the second she stepped outside, something in the

Without warning, she spun around and dove back into the car, curling up beneath the seat before Ernest could
even process what had happened.
His brows knit together. “Elissa, what the hell are you doing?”
“Shh!” She raised a trembling finger to her lips, pleading. “Please... just lethide here. Just for a little while!”
Hide? From what?
Ernest followed her wide-eyed stare and glanced out the window.
A black car idled at the curb. The man who stepped out scanned the street, his voice cutting through the quiet.
“Elissa! Elissa!”
Recognition dawned instantly.
Quentin spotted him too. “Isn't that—"
“Quentin.” Ernest's tone was sharp, his subtle shake of the head enough to silence him.
Quentin clamped his mouth shut.
Ernest turned his attention back to the woman cowering in the shadows of the car seat, her entire body
trembling as though the sheer act of breathing might give her away.
Had that man hurt her before? Was he the reason for the bruises, the split lip, the fear in her eyes?
“Quentin,” Ernest said, voice low but resolute. “Get in. We're taking her to the hospital.”
Quentin hesitated for only a second before nodding. “Understood, Mr. Flynn.” He shut the rear door behind him
and slid into the passenger seat. “Sebastian, drive.”
“Understood.”
As the car pulled away, Elissa remained curled up, barely daring to move.
Ernest cast her a sidelong glance. “It’s okay now. You can sit up.”
She flinched slightly at his voice, and then, as if waking from a trance, slowly uncurled herself and straightened,
pressing into the farthest corner of the seat.
“Thank you,” she murmured. “Really, thank you.”
She stole a glance outside, worry still shadowing her face. “You don’t have to taketo the hospital. Just drop
Ernest let out a sharp breath, incredulous. “Drop you off?”
His frustration was evident now. “So that man can find you again? Hurt you again?”
Elissa’s breath caught.
He had pieced it together without her saying a word?
“Elissa.” His voice was gentler this time, the edge gone. “I don’t do things halfway. If I'm helping you, I'm seeing
it through. We're going to the hospital.”

“But-" She faltered. The idea of him accompanying her, of being involved at all, felt... too much. She didn’t
deserve such kindness, truly.
Almost as if sensing her unease, he added, “You don’t trust me? How about this? When we get there, I'll call
Hadley and she will stay with you. You trust Hadley, don’t you?”
That left her with no room to argue.
A long silence stretched between them before she finally sighed, sagging against the door in reluctant surrender.
She couldn't refuse him now. Not after everything.
“Elissa!”
When they arrived at the hospital, Hadley was already waiting in the emergency center, having received the call
in advance.
“Hadley...” Elissa forced a weak, pained smile, but it did little to mask her exhaustion.
Hadley’s breath hitched at the sight of her friend-bruised, battered, barely holding herself together. Questions
burned on the tip of her tongue, but now wasn’t the time.
Right now, the only thing that mattered was getting Elissa the medical attention she needed.
“Con,” Hadley said softly. “Let’s get you checked out.”
Elissa nodded, allowing herself to be led inside.
Most of her injuries were surface-level contusions, but the swelling around her eye was severe.
The doctor examined her closely, his expression darkening. “You need to be careful with this injury. The impact
was dangerously close to your eyeball...” He exhaled sharply before adding, “You could've lost your
sight for good.”
Elissa swallowed hard.
The doctor, clearly accustomed to treating emergency cases, hesitated before asking, “Was it your partner who
did this to you?”
The color drained from Elissa’s face.
That reaction was all the confirmation he needed. His jaw clenched.
“Listen to me,” he said, his voice sharp with disapproval. “You need to cut that toxic partner out of your life.
There are plenty of good men in the world. And even if you never meet one, you don’t need a man to survive.”
As he spoke, he scribbled out a prescription with swift efficiency.
“You'll need an IV and a few hours of observation.”
“Alright. Thank you, doctor,” Elissa murmured. .
Hadley slipped an arm around her friend, guiding her out of the exam room. Ernest and Quentin were still

Quentin immediately stepped forward, taking the prescription from Hadley’s hands. “I'll handle this.”
Hadley blinked, momentarily surprised by the gesture. “Alright.”
Her gaze then shifted to Ernest, who stood quietly, his expression unreadable. “Thank you, Ernest. | can take it
from here. You should probably let Eric know what happened before he starts looking for me.”
“I will,” Ernest replied, though his attention remained on Elissa.
His usual composed demeanor softened just a fraction as he looked at her. When he finally spoke, his voice was
quieter, gentler. “Get srest.”
Elissa blinked, momentarily caught off guard. She lowered her gaze slightly, her voice almost shy. “I will Thank
you, Mr. Flynn.”
Then Ernest pressed his lips together. “You're welcome.”
But even as he said it, the words felt undeserved. Because if this was all he could do for her... and it still wasn't
enough.
Elissa settled onto the hospital bed, the soft hum of the IV drip filling the silence. Hadley sat beside her, arms
crossed, concern etched into every line of her face.
“Hadley, I'm sorry for troubling you,” Elissa murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
Hadley scoffed, shaking her head. “What nonsense are you saying?” she lightly scolded. “Haven't you done
enough forbefore?”
Friendship wasn’t about keeping score!
A pause. Then, carefully, Hadley spoke again. “I don’t want to pry, but... was it Robin?”
For a moment, Elissa didn’t speak. Then, slowly, she gave the smallest of nods.
Hadley let out a sharp sigh, frustration flashing in her eyes. “Elissa, are you really going to keep letting yourself
be dragged down by a man like that? He’s a liar, a manipulator-hell, he’s a married man! And now, he’s hitting
you? Elissa, please, listen to me. Walk away. Break free from him before it’s too late.”
“Hadley...” Elissa’s voice wavered, breaking. “Robin... he’s not just sman.”
She took a sharp breath, and then forced the words out, as if saying them aloud made them real. “He's my
husband. I am his wife.”
What?
For a long moment, Hadley could only stare. Then, suddenly, everything clicked.
Of course. It all made sense now. Elissa had never been the type to interfere in someone else's marriage. She
never would have.
Elissa let out a choked sound, pressing her trembling fingers to her lips. “He wasn’t like this before,” she
murmured. “He changed... because of me.”
