Chapter 231 At that moment, Evelyn pondered it. The hotel belonged to Grant Group and was managed by Sharron.
As the CEO of the company, Lucas naturally had certain privileges. So, was it Lucas who had arranged for the flowers to be sent? But they would soon be filing for divorce. In other words, their marriage was about to end. Sending flowers like this felt out of place.
"Do you need something?" Evelyn stood at the door, her tone neutral. She made no move to invite Lucas in, nor did she ask about the bouquet.
Lucas looked down and studied her indifferent expression in silence before finally speaking. "Grandma called me." Just that one sentence made Evelyn understand what he meant.
Most likely, Maria was uneasy and had called Lucas to test him about what day it was, or whether he was actually with her.
"Just say whatever to get by," Evelyn replied calmly.
Lucas pointed toward the hotel logo. "Grandma knows we're both in Pearlia. Let's video call her later." Evelyn thought it over and agreed in the end. "Alright." They had already signed an agreement to keep it a secret for a year. Lucas did not need to remind her of the unspoken rules.
She withdrew her gaze and walked back inside.
Lucas followed her in at a leisurely pace.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtHe looked around the room and quickly spotted the bouquet placed on the couch. It was conspicuous, yet clearly neglected.
His gaze drifted over it nonchalantly, but he did not bring it up, nor did he mention knowing it was her birthday.
By the the reached the coffee table, Evelyn had already put away her written drafts and laptop.
She had not said a word, but the guard she put on was crystal clear.
Respecting her boundaries, Lucas did not move closer until she finished tidying everything up.
Then, with an ambiguous look, he raised an eyebrow. "There's nothing more that I'm not allowed to see, right?" Evelyn turned to look at him, sensing a deeper meaning to his words. It sounded like teasing, almost mocking. Lucas added casually, "Mind if I sit?" Evelyn responded, "Suit yourself." Only after she had put away all the important files and documents did she feel at ease.
Lucas sat down and checked the time, though it was not clear what he was thinking.
Evelyn did not pay him much attention. Still, she could not help but wonder when he was leaving.
When exactly were they supposed to call Maria? She was very tired at this point.
Lucas, having finished glancing at his phone, noticed her tired demeanor. "Have you had a checkup lately?" After a pause, he added, "Is Flying Seal Group overworking you?" Evelyn zipped and locked her suitcase before replying, "No." It was a perfunctory response, given out of politeness. No more than that was said.
Of course, Lucas could tell, but he did not seem to mind. His lips curved into a faint smile. "We'll call Grandma at 10:30 pm. Hang in there a little longer." Evelyn glanced at the time. There was just a little over 20 minutes to go.
Her brain had been working too much for the past two days, and she was especially drained today. "You can knock when the tcomes, and I'll cout. Do as you please until then." Evelyn did not wait for his reaction and turned straight into her bedroom to take a short nap.
She could not be bothered with whatever Lucas chose to do in the hall.
She certainly was not going to sit there staring at him. There was nothing for them to talk about anymore.
As for Maria calling to check in with Lucas, he would have found out today was her birthday due to that. But he had not wished her happy birthday, and Evelyn figured it no longer mattered.
As for the bouquet, she had no interest in guessing or caring about it anymore.
Lucas glanced at the ton his phone, then leaned back on the couch, looking toward the closed bedroom door.
Eventually, his gaze landed on the bouquet across from him.
Evelyn woke up to light streaming in through a crack in the curtains.
Her brain booted up quickly, and she sat up in surprise.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmShe had slept through the night? Lucas had not knocked on her door to wake her up for the video call with Maria.
She was a light sleeper. If he had knocked, she would have woken up.
Regardless, Evelyn did not dwell on it.
She got up quickly to wash up Lucas had left at spoint, as the living En room was empty. She withdrew her gaze without much thought and finished getting ready.
When she returned to her room to change clothes, her eyes landed on a small black velvet gift box sitting on En the nightstand. She walked over and opened it.
Inside was a stunning imperial green emerald necklace inlaid with diamonds.
The quality was exceptional.
After a closer look, she realized it matched the Reed family's heirloom ring in craftsmanship, texture, and craftsmanshelly's even design.
