Chapter 168 Evelyn hadn't expected Maria, despite her age, to be so in touch with new trends.

A candlelight dinner was one thing, but knowing about themed suites revolving around Valentine's Day caught her off guard.

Before she could figure out how to refuse, Lucas spoke first, his tone indifferent. "That's something for young couples. I'm busy with work. There's no need for that, Grandma." He preemptively refused on Evelyn's behalf.

Evelyn wasn't surprised. She lowered her gaze and quietly ate her oatmeal. Having Lucas deal with this kind of hassle himself spared her the headache.

Maria blinked in surprise for a moment. "You can go on a date after work! I didn't say you had to take the whole day off! What excuses are you making now?" Lucas raised an eyebrow. "It's not an excuse. I really do have work." This made Evelyn look up at him. Just then, Lucas' phone rang. He picked it up and glanced at the message, but seeing Evelyn sitting right next to him, he quickly turned the screen face down on the table-almost as though to hide it.

Evelyn didn't mind his action. She didn't need to guess to know that Lucas probably didn't have to work on that day. It was just that his intended date for Valentine's Day was Tiffany.

Maria, clearly displeased, could hardly tolerate Lucas' indifferent attitude. With an audible huff, she slammed her hand down on the table. "No matter how important your work is, isn't your relationship with your wife more important? Postpone it! I've already made the reservation for the restaurant and hotel. You have to go!" Evelyn hadn't expected Maria to get so angry. She almost blurted out an explanation about the divorce, but the words were stuck in her throat. Biting her lip, she chose not to fan the flames.

When Lucas saw Maria getting angry, he actually smiled a little. He then raised his hand to gently pat her back. "Alright. I know. Don't be mad." Maria's expression softened.

"Now that's more like it. Enjoy your dinner. I'll go take my blood pressure medication," she said before leaving. Evelyn didn't say anything more and quietly finished her meal. She knew what Lucas was doing. He was merely offering a temporary solution. He just didn't want to upset Maria.

No matter how Maria had arranged things, Lucas had no intention of showing up.

After finishing her meal, Evelyn went to wash her hands. When she cback, Lucas was already gone. Her expression darkened. Lucas still hadn't given her an answer.

She could buy the ring, and she wasn't demanding it from him.

Regardless, Evelyn bade Maria goodbye and called for a car to leave. She sent Lucas two more text messages on her way back to the apartment.

"The ring means a lot to me. I'm willing to pay whatever it takes. Please letknow once you've decided." "Lucas, I'm begging you."

However, her messages went unanswered. She didn't know if he had ignored them or simply hadn't e seem them. No matter how anxious she felt, Evelyn had no choice but to wait for him to respond. She had no other options.

During the waiting period, Evelyn didn't neglect her work at Flying Seal Group. The following days were busy, NO with the project set to officially begin public bidding in a week, leaving her no room to slack off.

At the stime, she kept in touch with the hospital regarding the liver transplant for Leonard. He had been waiting for a liver transplant for almost five months, and finally, they were getting close. Evelyn was both excited and nervous, constantly following up on the progress. At 7:00 pm that Friday, Evelyn packed her things after finishing her work and prepared to go home. As she reached the downstairs lobby, her phone rang. To her surprise, it was a call from Lucas.

Her chest tightened as she wondered if it was about the ring.

She swiped to answer the call.

The deep, indifferent voice on the other end spoke. "I've sent someone to go pick you up. The car is waiting downstairs at Flying Seal Group."
