Chapter 697
“Carla, could you leave us alone for a moment?” Grace had something to say to Brittany.
Barely concealing her resentment, Carla nodded and left with Daniel.
Ever since her return to Imperial City, Brittany and Grace had seen each other a few times. Their encounters had
been far from peaceful, and today was no different.
“Did you do it?”
Brittany knew what she was asking, “It’s right there in front of you.”
“Why would you do this? Hasn’t Zac been good to you?” Grace couldn’t understand.
Brittany scoffed, “Madam, if it were you, would you let go so easily?”
Grace was taken aback. She didn’t know much about the events five years before, but she couldn’t confidently say
she wouldn’t have made the same choices.
“But I thought… I thought you could forgive him…” Grace remembered the first time she met Brittany. She was so

“Madam,” Brittany cut her off, “Do not do unto others what you would not have them do to you. If you were in my
shoes, and you could forgive him, then you can judge me. Otherwise, please don’t stand on a moral high ground
and criticize me.”
Grace went pale.
“I should be going. You should rest.” Brittany turned to leave, but then stopped and looked back at the old woman.
“I’ve already submitted the divorce papers. I don’t want anything. I just want Daniel. If the Salter family refuses to
let go, I have ways to get custody. You should think about how to persuade him to sign the papers.”
As she left the room, Carla glared at Brittany, wishing she could tear her apart.
Brittany raised her hand, “Daniel, let’s go.”
Daniel took Brittany’s hand, and they stepped into the elevator.
As the elevator doors closed, Daniel looked up at Brittany, “Mom, are you and dad getting a divorce?”
Brittany frowned, surprised that he knew. “How did you find out?”
“Aunt Carla told me.” Daniel looked hopeful as he asked, “Is it true?”
Brittany crouched down to his level, “Let’s find a quiet place and have a chat, okay?”
Daniel was smart, and some things were inevitably going to come out.
Daniel nodded solemnly.
“Ding.”
The elevator reached the basement.
Brittany led Daniel out to the hospital’s back garden, found a secluded corner, and sat down with him.
“Your dad and I were together a long time ago, and we had you. But then we had problems, so we separated.”
“So, Mom, for those five years that you weren’t with me, you were with William?”
“Sort of. But for those five years, I didn’t know you existed.” Brittany told him honestly, “Daniel, I regret that I
couldn’t be with you for those five years. I hope that you can stay with me from now on.”
Daniel looked at Brittany, tears welling in his eyes as he asked, “What about Dad?”
If he stayed with his mom, then his dad would have been alone.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmBrittany knew that Daniel had been with Isaac for five years, and despite their lukewarm relationship, they were still
tied by blood.
She suddenly felt fearful that Daniel wouldn’t choose her.
She licked her lips, “You can keep in touch with your dad. I won’t interfere.”
Daniel sat on the bench, swinging his little legs back and forth as he thought. Finally, he asked, “Will you and dad
ever get back together?”
“No.”
Brittany couldn’t forget her grandmother’s death, and Isaac would never forgive a woman who had driven him to
bankruptcy.
Tears fell from Daniel’s eyes, and Brittany hurriedly pulled him into her arms, “Daniel, don’t cry…”
He cried, looking lost. He had thought about his mother every single day for the past five years.
After she was finally back, he was then about to lose his dad.
He sobbed, and Brittany felt a pain in her heart as she held him and cried too.
They cried for a long time, until Daniel wiped his tears and cupped Brittany’s

“I will behave, I’ll study hard, and I will grow up to protect you.”
