Winnie returned to Xavier’s place on the thirty-second floor and promptly fell asleep.
The following morning, she was woken up by clanking sounds in the kitchen. It was past
ten o’clock in the morning when she roused.
Her guard went up immediately. It could be Molly, or Xavier could have traveled the entire
night and arrived at his house this morning.
However, she walked out of the bedroom to realize that it was her grandmother, Jacinta,
bustling around the kitchen.
Delight and surprise bubbled up within her. “Granny, when did you arrive? I didn’t hear a
thing!” she blurted out in joy.
Seeing her, Jacinta immediately turned down the fire on the stove and shot her edgy
looks.
Winnie looked in the direction Jacinta was hinting and realized Louis was here, too. The
man was seated in a corner in the living room. That was why she did not spot him earlier.
Oh, Granny is afraid that Louis will realize I’m putting up an act because I’m not
pretending to be dumb.
“It’s fine, Granny,” Winnie assured her. “Go back to the kitchen. I’ll talk to Mr. Tanser.”
Jacinta gaped in disbelief. “He knows?”
Winnie gave her a firm nod.
“All right, go on then. Breakfast is almost ready. You can look forward to it.”
“Sure,” Winnie replied obediently. She then headed to Louis’ spot in the living room.
Sitting down across from Louis, she did not bother with her act. “Mr. Tanser, I believe
Xavier told you I need your help to investigate a courier company under Fairchild
Corporation, right?”
Louis was astounded to learn that Winnie was actually acting and that her acting was
pretty convincing.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtForcing himself to stay calm, he replied, “Yes, Mrs. Fairchild. I’ve received his order.”
“Good. I’ll send you the courier company’s name later. Stay for breakfast.”
“No need. Thanks for the invitation, but I’ve already had breakfast before coming here.”
Louis was nervous to talk to a clean and tidy Winnie. It felt like the early days when he
first started working for Xavier.
Strangely, he realized Winnie could be as decisive and vicious as his employer.
“Okay. What will we do later?” Winnie asked.
“After you and Mdm. Sumner had breakfast, we shall head to the hospital. Zyon heads
there every day, so he’ll be there today.”
Winnie nodded and got up. “Got it. You’re familiar with this place, so make yourself at
home.”
Louis was speechless. She carries herself as if she were the mistress of the house. Mr.
Xavier and her are a match made in heaven.
By the time Winnie washed herself up, Jacinta had already served breakfast on the dining
table.
They chatted for a while before Jacinta noticed Winnie glancing at her phone several
times. Her fingers were tapping on the screen deftly as though she was occupied with
something.
Elderly people loved nagging, so Jacinta chided, “What are you doing? Focus on your
breakfast. You can play with your phone after breakfast.”
“Oh, okay.” No matter how capable Winnie was outside, she was an obedient child at
home.
She was not actually playing with her phone.
Instead, she wondered if she should text Xavier after their conversation ended on a sour
note last night.
After clicking into their chat, she kept typing and deleting her text hesitantly. What should
I text him?
Now that Jacinta had interrupted her, she exited the chat.
Meanwhile, Xavier was waiting for Winnie’s text patiently.
He had been in contact with Louis all the while.
Louis sent him several texts: Mr. Xavier, Mrs. Fairchild is up.
Louis: Mr. Xavier, Mrs. Fairchild told me about the courier company.
Louis: Mr. Xavier, Mrs. Fairchild is having breakfast with Mdm. Sumner.
Louis: Mr. Xavier, Mrs. Fairchild is looking at her phone.
Hence, Xavier took his phone and waited patiently. He saw Winnie typing in the chat for a
long time.
However, there was no text from her. In the end, she stopped typing and disappeared.
Xavier grew increasingly anxious. Furious, he asked Louis: What is she doing now? Is she
no longer looking at her phone?
Louis: Mr. Xavier, Mdm. Sumner told Mrs. Fairchild to stop looking at her phone when she’s
eating.
Xavier fell silent. Well, that’s a valid reason. I can forgive her. She can’t send me a text, so
I’ll do it.
Even though Winnie lied to him last night, he could not bring himself to neglect her.
Xavier: Are you up? Did you sleep well last night?
When the notification arrived, Winnie quickly clicked into the chat after noticing it was a
text from Xavier.
Reading the text, she noticed Xavier seemed to be playing nice. Thus, her mood improved
considerably.
Winnie: I’m up. I slept pretty well. I’m going to teach the b*stard a lesson at the hospital
later. What about you?
Noticing the smile flitting across Winnie’s lips, Jacinta asked, “Who are you chatting with?”
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm“Xavier,” Winnie replied honestly.
Jacinta’s expression changed abruptly. She avoided Louis’ gaze and lowered her voice.
“Winnie, didn’t you decide to get a divorce? Why are you chatting with him happily? I
thought he used to despise you.”
“Granny.” Winnie’s voice was low as she explained, “It’s actually a misunderstanding, and
we’ve already resolved it. Things weren’t necessarily what they seemed.”
“What are you talking about, Winnie?” Jacinta grew emotional. “You’ve spent the last few
days with him, right? Did he cast a spell on you or something? Why are you siding with
him? He must’ve said that after realizing you’re not a retard. You can’t trust someone who
doesn’t speak his mind! He acts one way to your face and another behind your back!”
“Granny.” Winnie was slightly stunned by her outburst. “What’s wrong? Why are you so
emotional?”
She had never seen her grandmother lose her temper this abruptly before.
“I’m not emotional!” Despite saying that, Jacinta put on a stern expression. She then
placed her fork down and pulled Winnie to a room.
“Winnie, the Fairchild men are all scoundrels. You can’t fall for Xavier’s lies. Look at Yulissa.
Isn’t that obvious?”
Winnie tried to explain. “Yulissa, well… She’s a complicated person. Besides—”
Jacinta interrupted crabbily, “Besides what? Have you seen Xavier’s mother? She didn’t
show up during Old Mr. Fairchild’s birthday. Do you know why? It’s because Xavier’s father
was a b*stard who harmed her, so she ended up getting a divorce from him. Old Mr.
Fairchild was worse when he was young. He broke many women’s hearts without sparing
their feelings. The Fairchild men are scoundrels. Winnie, you can’t fall for his trap!”
“Granny…” Winnie found Jacinta’s reaction bizarre.
Xavier’s parents got a divorce ages ago. Winnie had read about that in the report about
the Fairchild family. However, there was barely any information about Rufus. Why does
Granny know him that well? She didn’t hesitate to speak badly about him. This is strange.
