Chapter 814
The secretary looked up and carefully observed Douglas' gloomy face. To be frank, she couldn't make heads or tails
of the current situation. After all, Douglas brutally retaliated against the Campbell Family with lightning speed and
caused the Campbell Family to go bankrupt.
He had an inescapable responsibility for the Campbell Family's disastrous end. But now, he hesitated once it came
to Whitney.
Douglas reached out to rub the space between his eyebrows and pursed his thin lips. Then, he silently dismissed his
secretary as he lowered his head and began reading the document. The secretary tactfully did not say anything
else as she understood that he did not want to continue this discussion. Therefore, she quietly turned and left.
…
Whitney had been muddle-headed these days, barely going through the motions. She did not use the cashed-out
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtmoney to make up for the loss. Instead, she used it to dismiss all the employees of the company. Finally, she bought
back the company's stocks at their original prices with the remaining money. The huge company was now an empty
shell heavily in debt.
She only did this to get herself arrested in the hope that it would ease Douglas' rage and that he could finally let the
Campbell Family go. In fact, she could not care less about the Family and only wanted to protect her brother.
Although she was coerced by her father, Jonathan, to frame Douglas back then, the fact remained that she was the
one who executed the act. It could be seen as retribution now that Jonathan had a stroke and Michael had been
imprisoned. But her younger brother, Aaron, was innocent. He was only a student back then and was not involved
in those plots—he should not be caught up in this mess. As such, she was more than willing to be the person to
appease Douglas' anger.
She felt inexplicably relaxed after finishing dealing with the Family's remaining affairs. Although she knew she might
need to spend the rest of her life in prison, she had never felt so mentally relaxed.
She turned on her mobile phone and was mindlessly scrolling through her phone when she saw Nicole's name.
Whitney momentarily paused at the sight, and after some hesitation, she dialed Nicole's number. Nicole connected
the call within seconds.
"What's up, Whitney?" Whitney could even hear Nicole's exhaustion through the phone.
"It's me, Miss Nicole. Are you... alright?" Whitney asked cautiously.
"I'm fine." Nicole smiled lightly, hearing that. She paused for a bit—perhaps trying to think of a good excuse to
explain the exhaustion—before continuing, "I'm with Hayden. You know, the kid is very energetic, so it's been a little
taxing."
Whitney lowered her eyes upon hearing that. She knew at that instant that Nicole was coming up with an excuse
because the truth was that something else had happened. "Miss Nicole, I heard that your dad hit Mrs. Gardner."
Nicole was not surprised that Whitney knew about this matter. So, she nodded and replied calmly, "Yes, he did.
Luckily the Gardner Family did not take their anger out on me. I'm alright."

Whitney had been by Nicole's side for so many years, so she naturally knew that Nicole bore no familial feelings
toward her father. She did not think it was necessary to dwell on the topic, but as she tried to continue speaking,
her throat became stuffy all of a sudden, and she had to speak slowly, "Miss Nicole, I may not be coming back." As
she spoke, she lowered her head, and there was an unconcealable sense of sadness in her voice and expression.
Nicole immediately thought of something and questioned hoarsely, "Is it because of Douglas?
Whitney merely shook her head but quickly realized that Nicole couldn't see her. So, her voice became a little
choked up as she replied, "No, not at all. I just want to say goodbye to you because… I may not be coming back."
Nicole instantly became suspicious. She took a breath and could not help but frown when she thought about the
possibilities. "Whitney, don't overthink. I can help you. Just tell me what's going on."
Of course, Whitney knew that Nicole could help her. But money was not the only issue; she betrayed Douglas, and it
was not something that she could make up for using money.
