Chapter 28 Mitchell was feeling frustrated, too.
"Well, looks like none of us saw her this time. We'll just have to wait for another chance," his father said with a sigh.
"Alright," Mitchell replied, then headed straight for his room.
His mind was a tangled mess.
It felt like things had already slipped beyond his control.
Effie seemed dead set on leaving.

Let her go out and see how tough the world could be-eventually, she'd crunning back.
After all, Effie loved him so much. Sooner or later, she'd be begging to return to his side.
Mitchell was absolutely certain of it.
The next morning, after Effie finished washing up, she stepped out of her room.
A lavish breakfast was already spread across the dining table.
Lyman looked up as soon as he saw her, greeting her with a warm smile. "Chave sbreakfast." Effie walked over and sat down, marveling inwardly-what window had fate possibly closed for Lyman? The man was practically a jack of all trades.
She remembered all the rumors about how cold and ruthless he was, but somehow, she just couldn't see it. Were they even talking about the sperson? After she sat down, Lyman slid a mug of warm milk in front of her, his voice gentle. "Drink smilk first. It'll help settle your stomach." Effie took the mug and sipped. The comforting warmth slid down her throat, spreading through her body. She glanced up at Lyman. "How cyou're up so early?" "Just happened to wake up," he said, though in truth, he'd gotten up early just to cook breakfast for her. The gesture made Effie's heart flutter. She looked down at the feast in front of her eggs, bacon, toast, fruit salad, and her favorite: blueberry pancakes.
She couldn't help but exclaim, "Lyman, is there anything you can't do? Even your cooking is amazing." Lyman raised an eyebrow, his tone teasing. "What, starting to feel like you hit the jackpot?" Effie blushed and ducked her head, taking a mouthful of pancake. "Yeah, I guess I did." She thought back to all those years with Mitchell-she'd always been the one making breakfast.
Mitchell acted like a spoiled prince, never lifting a finger, just waiting to be served. After breakfast, Lyman drove Effie to work.
But before they reached the office, Effie asked him to stop at the corner down the road instead. She walked the rest of the way.
Lyman's car was a bit flashy, and the license plate was even more eye-catching.
Once the car stopped, he reminded her, "Callif you need anything." Effie nodded. "Don't worry. Drive safe." Then she turned and walked toward the office.
She thought she was being careful.

Suzan was standing outside the office, and from a distance she saw Effie climbing, out of the luxury car. Instantly, a wave of jealousy and suspicion washed over her. At first, she thought she must be seeing things.
But as she looked closer, there was no mistaking it. It really was Effie.
Suzan narrowed her eyes, a sly smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. Inside, she sneered When did Effie manage to hook up with such a wealthy guy? No wonder she'd been acting so high and mighty lately. Suzan suddenly remembered that mysterious contact nin Effie's phone.
Could this man be the "husband" Effie had in her contacts? Who would have thought little Miss Effie was such a schemer? Quickly, Suzan pulled out her phone and snapped a photo of Effie stepping out of the car. She was too far to catch the license plate, but that didn't matter.
She was already plotting how she'd show this photo to Mitchell.
Then he'd see what Effie was really like a shameless flirt, stringing guys along before she'd even properly broken up with him. Just wait, Suzan thought viciously. This was going to get interesting.
