| glanced at my phone. He had called several times.

“I'm with Emma. She got pretty drunk, so I'm taking her home."

"Where are you? I'll cget you."

His voice carried a hint of urgency, something | hadn't heard from

him in ages.

I'm at The Whiskey Tavern on Riverside Drive. It's far, Leo. I'll just grab a cab and head home"

| reflexively tried to decline.

I didn't want to wait for him in the bar-it would take forever for him

to get here. I'd rather just take a cab and get hfaster.
