The impatient honking from the cars behind snapped Frederick back to reality, prompting him to quickly

maneuver his car to the curb. Turning to face Marguerite, his intense gaze seemed to be silently urging her for

more explanations.

Marguerite's heart raced under his scrutiny. She knew deep down she really didn't have the right to bring this up

with Frederick, especially considering their past and how her pregnancy with Maurice had been a catalyst in their

fallout. Bringing it up now felt somewhat untimely.

"I'm sorry. | shouldn't have mentioned it, but it's just been eating at me. Miley's all caught up with Penelope's

, and | didn't know who else to turn to or what to do."

"You knew Miley was checking Maurice's financials?"

Marguerite shook her head, "It's no use. We did one right after Teresa was born. | only decided to stay with

Maurice because | saw the results confirming Teresa was his. Otherwise, | would've taken Teresa and left years

ago."

"You had a paternity test done before?"

Marguerite's expression was the picture of defeat.

"Yeah. Just because he says Teresa is his, does that make it true? | have no idea who the man was that night."
